Q:  What are  your favorite things about shooting Sporting Clays?
A:  I like the variety in Sporting Clays. Every station is different, and every range is unique. That quality of change makes is exciting!

Q:  What is your favorite shooting venue?
A:  In Arizona I like the Picacho range, in California, I favor Oak Tree. The Desert Lakes range in Las Vegas (Boulder City) is awesome. The Gallatin range just north of Bozeman is fun... they have a wobble trap machine which throws across a canyon--sometimes into the trees at 30 yards, sometimes up into the wind, which quickly carries them behind you!! I also found the course in Nemacolin, PA challenging... too many trees for us western guys!! But Desert Lakes is probably my favorite.

Q:  What has been your favorite shoot/event?
A:  I have been to a couple of the Quall Unlimited Continental Shoots (in Mesquite, NV the past 2 years), and they are fun. Lots of people, the Quail fund raiser. Good Times!!

Q:  What is your favorite target presentation?
A:  Incomers seem to suit me. They taste like chicken.

Q:  What is your least favorite target presentation?
A:  Long crossers... I have yet to miss one in front! I need to go burn a couple cases at Skeet 4 to get this figured out.

Q:  What do you feel is your greatest challenge in Sporting?
A:  I have plateau'ed in the mid-70's, and I am working on that next step up. I have been working on the cadence and moving the gun smoothly, keeping the barrel in front of target at all times. This is a challenge! Old habits die hard.

Q:  What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment with regards to Sporting Clays?
A:  Hitting more than I miss! But seriously? Becoming more consistent... I hate shooting 9, 8, 8, 2, 7, 5, 8.... I want all 8's and better!

Q:  What, if any, are your Sporting Clays goals?
A:  To become a consistent shooter able to hit all target presentations well.

Q:  Do you shoot sub-gauge events?
A:  Yes.  20 gauge is my favorite.

Q:  What is the one "gizmo" you find most useful when shooting?
A:  Bright pink shoes to distract all the other shooters... Actually, I don't have anything out of the ordinary, a 1/2 shell vest, good glasses and earplugs.... nothing too gizmo-y.

Q:  What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
A:  Burn your 100 bucks on some instruction. Get into the good habits right away!

Q:  Anything else we should know?
A:  I have been shooting competitively for many, many years. I have run matches, been range officer, etc, at local, state, regional and national matches. I have taught kids and new shooters about shooting and shooting safety. And a couple years ago, I had a brain fade and was responsible for a shooting accident where a friend was injured. Never, never, never get complacent on firearm safety. Double and triple check your firearms, and make sure everyone around you does the same!

Webmaster's commentary:

I'm glad Steve took the time to submit his questionnaire and pose for a couple of pictures.  Help keep the Featured Shooter feature going by filling out the "Shooter Questionnaire."
