2011 Zone 7 Championship
Ben Avery Clay Target Center
April 13-17, 2011

The 2011 Zone 7 Championship will be held at Ben Avery Clay Target Center in Phoenix, AZ from April 13-17, 2011.  Ben Avery Clay Target Center is located just north of Phoenix, near the junction of I-17 and Carefree Highway.  For those of you have haven't ever been to BACTC, or haven't been there in a few years, you're in for a treat.  Dan Twitchell has been managing the Clay Target Center and they have made a wealth of improvements!  A third course has been added, a portable tower is on-site, and there are 102 paved RV spaces right at the Clay Target Center.  There are additional RV spaces available near the main range, as well.

This year we'll have all the events you could want (900 total targets).  We'll have 280 trophies in all.  We'll have some side games and practice fields setup.

We will be featuring a "Wednesday Warm-Up" and a "Thursday Warm-Up" event.  These will be 100-target registered events but are under separate shoot numbers, so they are "Non-Zone Shoot Targets" that you can use to get your minimum year-to-date targets in before you shoot the Zone.  This will make it easier for the folks from up north to be able to compete in their class, as opposed to having to shoot in a penalty class.  For those who aren't familiar with the target requirements, below is an excerpt from the NSCA Rule Book:

IV-B-4-c.  To be eligible for class prizes, monies and/or awards at Zone Shoots, a shooter must have shot a minimum of 300 registered targets in the current year, prior to the shoot. The Preliminary Events do not count towards minimum targets unless they are held under a separate shoot number. If a shooter does not have a minimum of 300 targets, he/she shall shoot every event at the shoot and win prizes, monies and/or awards in a penalty class, one class above his/her current class.

IV-B-4-d.  Following the Zone Shoot all shooters who were placed in a penalty class as a result of their failure to meet the 300 registered target requirement, will return to their original class, with the following exceptions: If the shooter earns a punch or punches in the penalty class they will remain in that penalty class for the remainder of the shoot year. Example: If the shooter was originally in class E and the newly assigned higher class, based on penalty class, is class D, and if the shooter subsequently wins sufficient punches in the event, he will advance to class C.

We invite everyone to make your plans, get your reservations, reserve your golf cart!  We look forward to seeing everyone in April at Ben Avery Clay Target Center for the 2011 Zone 7 Championship!

Sponsorship & Donation Information

The ASCA is working in conjunction with the BACTC on this shoot. We are going to supply some of the trappers, all of the trophies, lots of give-aways, and the Saturday evening dinner. We are providing part of the shoot admin team, and we are handling the golf cart rental arrangements. While we will get a slice of the pie, sponsorships help us pay the way and give back to the shooters. We’ve secured some sponsorship, but we can certainly use some more support, so help us out if you can!

Event sponsorships range in cost from $100 to $1,500 (or equivalent value in merchandise for door prizes).

The Basic Sponsorships costs $100 and features an 8.5" x 11" color laminated sign prominently displayed along the cart path for the duration of the shoot.

Other levels of sponsorship available are the Course Level sponsorships, listed below:

Sub-Ga./Pump/SxS Course Sponsorship for $500 includes 8.5" x 11" color laminated station signs for the entire course for duration of event (Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday).

5-Stand Prelim Course Sponsorship for $500 includes 8.5" x 11" color laminated station signs for the entire course for duration of event (Thursday & Friday).

5-Stand Main Course Sponsorship for $500 includes 8.5" x 11" color laminated station signs for the entire course for duration of event (Saturday & Sunday).

Preliminary Course Sponsorship for $500 includes 8.5" x 11" color laminated station signs for the entire course for duration of event (Friday Only).

FITASC Course Sponsorship for $500 includes 8.5" x 11" color laminated Parcour & Peg Signs for the entire course for duration of event (Thursday - Sunday).

Main Event Course Sponsorship for $1,500 includes 8.5" x 11" color laminated station signs for the entire course for duration of event (Saturday & Sunday).

Of course, every sponsorship will get your business card added of the Friends of the ASCA page.

For more information and to submit a sponsorship request, please click here.

As an added incentive, we've structured a free-entry program for various levels of sponsorship.  A sponsorship in the amount of $300 will receive a complimentary entry into the Prelim (a $95 value).  A $700 sponsorship will receive a complimentary entry into the Main Even (a $195 value).  A $1,000 sponsorship will receive a complimentary entry into  both the Prelim and Main Events (a $290 value).

All event sponsors are welcome to have a vendor presence at the shoot.  There is a $20 daily fee payable to the Ben Avery Clay Target Center.  Additionally, there are some liability insurance forms that must be on file with the Arizona Game and Fish Department.  Contact Sarah at the Ben Avery Clay Target Center for details.

Golf Cart Rental Information

Golf carts are available for rent.  All golf carts available for rent are 4-seat models.  It is very difficult to predict the rental requirement for a shoot of this duration; so we have a limited number of carts available for 4-day and 5-day rental, with more available for 3-day rental.  The rental cost schedule is as follows:

3-day Golf Cart Rental - Friday thru Sunday $200.00
4-day Golf Cart Rental - Thursday thru Sunday $265.00
5-day Golf Cart Rental - Wednesday thru Sunday $330.00

While I know the costs seem high, please bear in mind that we have the rental cost of the cart, delivery costs on a per-load basis, as well as insurance costs.  We are simply trying to break-even; there will probably not be a lot of 5-day rentals, but we want to make them available for those who want or need them.

Golf cart rental reservations can be made via the event registration form.  There is a $100 deposit required to reserve your golf cart.

Liability concerns dictates that drivers must be at least 16 years of age and have in their possession a valid driver’s license. In addition a parent must accompany any driver under the age of 18. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in the cart being parked for the remainder of the tournament. Any reckless driving or entry into off limits areas will result in the same penalty. Range staff and shoot management will have the sole discretion in this matter. Carts may not carry more persons than they are designed to transport.

Zone 7 Championship T-Shirt Information

T-Shirts are available for advanced purchase via the registration form.  These are available in white only.  These will be available in 5 sizes (M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL).  Short sleeve shirts are $18 and long sleeve shorts are $25.  T-Shirt purchases require pre-payment.  Below is a preliminary mock-up of the shirts, but some details may vary.

There is a nearby water park.

Major League Baseball has a huge presence in the area.

There are hot air balloon rides and glider rides available nearby.

You can visit Tonto National Forest.

It is a pretty good hike, but if you've got time coming or going, the Grand Canyon is certainly worth a side trip.

Ammunition Update

As many of you are aware, the NSCA recently made a change requiring use of factory-loaded ammunition for several shoots, inclusive of the 2011 Zone shoots.  The announcement was made on April 5, just eight short days before Zone 7 and nine days before Zone 6. We received several phone calls and e-mails expressing concern over this rule change and the impact is would have on costs for shooters.  These costs on top of already high fuel costs, had some shooters contemplating skipping the shoot or reducing the number of events they had planned to shoot.

In response to these complaints, we contact the NSCA Board members and asked for a reconsideration of the new rule change, or at the very least a special dispensation, based on the short time interval between the announcement of the rule change and the Zones 6 and 7 shoot dates.

Due to the close proximity of the rule change to the Zone 6 and 7 Championships, the NSCA granted a special dispensation to allow reloads in all events with the exception of FITASC at the Zone 6 and 7 competitions. This was a fair resolution, as the other zones have ample time to make the rule change known.

Once made aware of the issue, Michael Hampton and Robert Crow at the NSCA took immediate action to work on behalf of the shooters, with the support of the Executive Council, to alleviate any hardships caused by the rule change.

Miscellaneous Information

Reminder:  300 Minimum year-to-date targets required to compete in your class.  Per NSCA rules:

Note:  There will be Wednesday & Thursday warm-Up Events held under different shoot numbers, so these can be used toward your 300 minimum year-to-date target requirements.

Reminder:  Only factory-loaded 1 oz. (max) ammo may be shot in the FITASC event.
